Places to Visit in Mathura
Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and one of the seven holy cities of India. Plan half a day here, starting with Krishna Janmabhoomi and ending with the Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat.
1. Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi
The most important site in Mathura, built around the believed birth place of Krishna. The complex includes the Keshav Dev temple, Bhagavata Bhavan and Potra Kund, a stepped tank said to be used for baby Krishna’s first bath. Entry is free, but security is strict.
2. Dwarkadhish Temple
A temple built in 1814 in the old city, known for its carved architecture, colourful festival decorations and the Jhoolan and Holi celebrations. It is only a short ride from Vishram Ghat.
3. Vishram Ghat
The main bathing ghat on the Yamuna, where tradition says Krishna rested after defeating Kansa. Come in the evening for the Yamuna aarti. Many pilgrims also take a boat ride here.
4. Govardhan Hill and Radha Kund
Govardhan is about 21–25 km from Mathura. Pilgrims walk the 21 km parikrama around the sacred hill, passing Mansi Ganga, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund and Kusum Sarovar. E-rickshaws are available if you cannot walk.
5. Government Museum, Mathura
A good stop for sculptures from the Mathura school of art, including Kushan period pieces. Useful if you have extra time or want a break from temple queues.
Places to Visit in Vrindavan
Vrindavan is the town of temples, bhajans and Radha-Krishna devotion. Most visitors need a full day, and a second day if they want to see the older Goswami temples without rushing.
1. Banke Bihari Temple
The most visited temple in Vrindavan. The deity stands in the Tribhanga pose, and darshan is interrupted by a curtain that opens and closes. It gets very crowded, so go early and keep your belongings minimal.
2. Prem Mandir
A white marble temple built by Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj, with carvings of Krishna’s leelas such as Raas, Jhulan, Govardhan and Kaliya. It is especially beautiful in the evening when it is lit up.
3. ISKCON Krishna Balaram Temple
A peaceful marble temple in Raman Reti area with kirtan, Bhagavad Gita classes and the Samadhi of Srila Prabhupada. Entry is free, and Govinda’s restaurant serves pure vegetarian prasadam.
4. Radha Raman Temple
A temple of about 500 years, established by Gopal Bhatta Goswami. The deity is a self-manifested Shaligram, and a crown marks Radha’s presence instead of a separate idol.
5. Nidhivan and Seva Kunj
A sacred grove believed to be where Krishna performs Raas every night. Visitors are generally asked to leave before dusk, so go in the daytime.
6. Rangji Temple and Madan Mohan Temple
Rangji is a South Indian style temple with a grand gopuram. Madan Mohan, built in 1580, is among the oldest temples in Vrindavan. Both are quieter than Banke Bihari.
Places to Visit in Gokul
Gokul is a quieter stop on the Yamuna, linked with Krishna’s early childhood when Nanda Baba and Yashoda raised him. It is a good choice if you want time for prayer away from the Vrindavan crowds. Allow 2–3 hours.
- Nand Bhawan: the home of Nanda Baba and Yashoda, associated with Krishna’s childhood.
- Raman Reti: the sandy ground where Krishna and Balarama are said to have played. Devotees roll in the sand here.
- Chaurasi Khamba: a hall with 84 pillars linked with Nand Baba’s court.
- Brahmand Ghat: the ghat where Krishna is said to have shown the universe in his mouth to Yashoda.
- Mahavan and Raval: nearby places linked with Krishna’s early leelas and Radha Rani’s birthplace.
Places to Visit in Barsana
Barsana is Radha Rani’s village, about 45–50 km from Vrindavan. It sits on a hill and is world famous for Lathmar Holi. You can combine it with Nandgaon in one day by cab.
- Radha Rani Temple (Shriji Mandir): the hilltop temple with wide views across Braj. Expect a climb of many steps.
- Kirti Mandir: a temple dedicated to Radha’s mother, Kirti Maiya.
- Nandgaon and Nand Bhavan: Krishna’s foster father’s village, close to Barsana and visited on the same trip.
- Lathmar Holi: in March 2027 it is expected around 16–17 March, with Nandgaon’s Holi the day after. Exact dates are announced locally, so check before you book.

| Delhi | Mathura / Vrindavan | 150–185 km |

Distances are approximate and differ by source and road used.
How to Reach Mathura and Vrindavan
By road
From Delhi, take Noida, Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway, then exit at Mathura. The drive takes about 2.5–4 hours, depending on traffic, and the one-way toll is roughly ₹400 for a car. The expressway is smooth, but the last 15 km into Vrindavan is busy town road with e-rickshaws and pilgrims, so it can take as long as an hour. From December to January, fog is common on the expressway in the early morning. UPSRTC and private buses run from ISBT Kashmere Gate and Anand Vihar to Mathura. A one-way sedan cab from Delhi usually costs around ₹3,000–3,500.
By train
Mathura Junction (MTJ) is the main station, well connected to Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Lucknow and Varanasi. Useful trains include Gatimaan Express, Taj Express and Shatabdi Express from Delhi, and Golden Temple Mail and Punjab Mail from Mumbai. From Mathura Junction, an auto or cab to Vrindavan costs about ₹100–150 for an auto. Vrindavan has its own small station (BDB), connected mainly to Mathura and nearby towns.
By air
The nearest major airport is Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, about 158 km away. A cab to Mathura takes around 2.5–3 hours. Agra is also an option if you are combining the trip with the Taj Mahal.
Local transport
Use e-rickshaws and autos inside Vrindavan and Mathura, because lanes near the temples are narrow and parking is limited. For Gokul, Govardhan and Barsana, hire a cab for the day.
Where to Stay
Staying in Vrindavan is best if you want early morning darshan and evening aarti. Mathura suits you if you arrive by train or want to cover Krishna Janmabhoomi first. Prices below are approximate and change by season, so check current rates before booking.
| Type | Where | Examples and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dharamshala and guest house | Vrindavan, Govardhan | Simple rooms, often near temples. ISKCON’s guest house is popular, with rooms reported from about ₹1,200 a night. |
| Mid-range hotel | Vrindavan, Mathura | Good for families. Book near Parikrama Marg or on the Mathura–Vrindavan road for easier access. |
| Premium resort | Vrindavan, Govardhan | Options such as Radha Ashok, Ananda Krishna Van and Brij Vasundhara Resort (reported around ₹3,200 a night in Govardhan). |
Tip: Book well ahead for Holi, Janmashtami and winter weekends, and ask the hotel how far it is from Banke Bihari by e-rickshaw, because cars cannot enter the temple lanes.

- Banke Bihari: leather items are not allowed and phones should stay in your bag. The lanes are narrow, so carry only essentials and keep children and elders close.
- Dress code: wear modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees. Avoid shorts and sleeveless tops.
- Footwear: you remove shoes in many lanes and temples, so carry a small cloth bag or use the shoe stands.
- VIP or special darshan: some agents offer it, especially for Janmabhoomi and Banke Bihari. Use only verified, official arrangements and avoid paying unknown people, as scams are common.
